Jan 05,  · The Big Express always struck me as so strident, and not necessarily because of the bright sound, but because of that big production you like. "You're The Wish You Are I Had" has such a bizarre verse melody and such a catchy chorus. "Shake Your Donkey Up" has these 5/4 sections (or is it 18/4?) over this hoedown rhythm and drums being.

The album starts off with Wake Up, which is a poppy, MTV-type mainstream track, as is All You Pretty Girls. I really appreciate Shake You Donkey Up, which is a catchy and zany barn dancing piece that has you wanting more. Seagulls Screaming Kiss Her Kiss Her is just brilliant, with the brass thrown in. Just the title alone is so cool/5(32).

Dave Jennings takes a fresh look at XTC’s mids classic album, The Big Express. ’80s music’ is a phrase that seems to conjure up some very negative images nowadays. Yet as all Louder Than War readers will know, this was actually a hugely creative period in British music with a range of outstanding albums delivered.

Resultantly, the album finds him and bandmates Colin Moulding and Dave Gregory at their most kitchen-sink creative, as well as their most frustrating, which is a fundamental part of the proper XTC experience. So put your cleanest dirty shirt on, shake you donkey up.

The Big Express is the seventh studio album by the English band XTC, released in It was one of XTC's harder-edged albums, in contrast to the pastoral Mummer and Skylarking which were.
